DRIVER #16 // ARDEN INTERNATIONAL
How big is your family?
It’s just three of us: my mom, my dad and me.
If you were an animal which one would it be?
A tiger, because it’s on top of the food chain! [laughs]
What’s your favourite pastime?
There are too many to pick! Any water sport really: jet skiing, wakeboarding…
Who would play you in a biopic about your life?
There’s a soccer player who looks like me: Raphaël Guerreiro, he’s Portuguese. From side on he looks like me. But obviously he’s not an actor! That’s a hard question: I need to find a good actor for that [laughs]. Joseph Gordon Levitt maybe? Same name, same hair… Him or Tom Hardy [laughs].
What was your best subject at school?
Maths. I was very bad at English: I didn’t realise at the time how important English would be for a racing driver who has to deal with media. Maths is better for the engineers. It’s still good to know maths, but for our career we don’t use it that much as racing drivers.
Tell us one thing nobody knows about you…
I’m very OCD; I like everything to be organised and neat. I get really annoyed when everything is a mess because I can’t find anything. If my housemates are not so clean I can be a bit of a bastard…I put their dirty plates in their bed and stuff. I’m very mean [laughs]! If we’re sharing stuff, you have to be neat and tidy.
What’s your strangest talent or dinner-party trick?
[Clicks his tongue really loudly] That’s it! I’ve practised it for about three weeks because my friend could do it.
Favourite person to follow on Twitter/Instagram?
Kevin Hart, he’s pretty funny with some of the stuff he posts.
What is the worst thing you’ve ever heard over the radio?
It’s a hard question. The worse that happened to me was when I had a radio issue: it kept on beeping. I had to pull it out, but then the team could not communicate with me and the other way around. I fixed one problem but created another. That’s probably the worst I’ve ever had. I couldn’t drive with this radio beeping. It was driving me crazy!
Favourite moment of a race?
When you’re in second and you’re attacking for victory, and also the start. It’s always exciting. You never know what’s going to happen. It’s so unpredictable what could happen at the start for the viewers, for us…
Name three things that your engineer keeps telling to do?
“Push”, “Stay on the line”, “Focus on the warm-up procedure”.
What’s your usual reaction to “let’s take a group selfie?”
I’m okay with it to be honest. I know some other friends get really annoyed by it. I think with photos you reflect on it more in the years to come rather than on the actual moment. I like to take a lot of photos. When you don’t, you wish you did.
Have you ever been on your own Wikipedia page?
I did to see what they wrote about me [laughs]! At the moment it’s pretty simple. There’s not that much info. It’s pretty cool to have one I guess. I was surprised to have one, I didn’t expect it!
What’s the weirdest dream you’ve ever had?
I’ve had lots but it’s always hard to remember. When I have them I tell people at the time because you forget them straight away. People come in my dreams that I’ve not spoken to for years. Those are the weirdest dreams for me.
Where do you keep your trophies?
Mostly at home in Australia. I’ve collected most of my trophies from karting so my house has become a little bit like a museum. All my suits, helmets are also back home. I try to send them back home every year, especially all the important trophies.
